There is something tidy, even dialectical, about the narrative of a species evolving “to” transform a planet so radically that it departs from natural cycles that take place on geological time scales, then becoming self-aware as a geological force, then deciding to use this power for good—for justice and equality, for biodiversity, and for a stable climate.
